An Experience Indeed

8/13/2012

By: Joseph Abankwa

Participating in the GET Immersion Experience (GET IE) has been one of the greatest and thoughtful decisions I have made in my college career. When I initially heard about the program, I was reluctant to apply for it because I was hesitant about being away from campus for an entire semester. In addition, I thought I was incompetent considering I have not taken a lot of technical classes.  I spent a week contemplating and praying about whether I should apply for the program, but by the end of the week I did.

Within months, I received an interview offer from JPMorgan Chase. I felt jubilant and nervous because it was my first real interview.  I decided to visit the career services office to seek advice and tips on how to prepare.  In addition, I made frequent visits to review my resume and participate in mock interviews.

The initiatives and efforts I took proved to be beneficial when I received an offer to Intern at JPMorgan Chase for 8 months through the GET IE.  The Program surpassed my initial expectation, as I felt really challenged during the internship. As a sophomore with little technical background, I was able to acquire skills like HTML, CSS and SQL.  Furthermore, the GET IE gave me new insights about information technology. Previously, I thought IT was merely about fixing and troubleshooting computers. However, through this program I learned that information technology entails more than that. IT is about thinking analytically, problem solving, innovation and increasing efficiency.

The GET IE also introduced me to important networks of people. For example, I had the opportunity to have lunch with the CIO of JPMorgan to discuss prevalent problems in globally distributed companies.  Also, the program exposed me to real time collaboration. I worked in New York City and I had to collaborate with teams in London, Delaware and Hong Kong to work on projects by leveraging several collaboration tools like Cisco Telepresence, Teleconference, WebEx and email communication.

The GET IE is one of the best experiences any college student can get.  You will be challenged and it will help you decide what career path to embark on once you graduate from college
